The Great Sea

Vast and blue, and devoid of most varieties of fish, the Great Sea is a truly dangerous place for someone as young as Kaito, but he travels it nonetheless. The Great Sea's known borders can be charted to a grid of seven squares by seven squares, and the fishmen who inhabit the waters are more than happy to help Kaito fill this chart in--provided they get payment in the form of a snack.

At the moment, Kaito has yet to fill in the entire chart, but what IS filled in has crisp, clear charts, upon which notes from the Fishmen have been written. The following islands of the Great Sea have been charted (though not necessarily explored) in full, and are ordered row by row, column by column, with their place in the chart mentioned by their name.

Forsaken Fortress (A-1)
'I hear there's a fellow on Windfall Island who's collecting Skull Necklaces! You know who it is, fry? I don't. Sorry. What I CAN tell you is that those piggish monsters you see here in the Forsaken Fortress seem to carry those Skull Necklaces around all the time. Not that I think it's easy work stealing anything from the likes of those guys. And that's all the info I've got for you, fry! You'd better be thankful for the clues you got from me! I'm serious!'

The Forsaken Fortress used to be base to a small time band of pirates which Astral took care of, but soon after became host to the servants of Black Mist. Even after the fall of the Fortress, monsters still reside in its halls.

Gale Isle (A-4)
'Are you thinking you want to get into that cave, small fry? The one that's protected by the crazy winds on that island? Heh heh heh! OK, then. Let me tell you a little secret... If you go five squares south and one square east from here, you'll reach Ice Ring Isle, where you'll find an item that will make you as heavy as stone! If you get that item, you won't have to worry about getting blown over by winds!'

After retrieving the Iron Boots from Ice Ring Isle, Kaito was able to gain access to this place, destroying the enchanted 'wind blowing' stone. Inside, he would be visited by the ghostly memory of the Kokiri Sage 'Alit', who requested that he find his reincarnation to awaken him as the next sage.

Mother and Child Isles
(B-2)
'They say that inside the ring of rock that makes up the perimeter of that island, there lives an incredibly beautiful fairy! But the thing is, nobody's ever met her. Supposedly, the only way you'll ever meet her is to take a ride on a whirlwind and drop inside that rock perimeter from the sky above. Doesn't sound easy, fry...'

Inaccessible to most, Ponta's cyclones easily allowed Kaito entry to the center of the enormous ''mother' isle of these twin landmasses. He would there be met with by the Fairy King, and granted magic for his arrows.

Windfall Island (B-4)
'Out on the cape of this island is this crazy dancing fool who can't tell day from night! The guy's nuts...but you've got to respect someone who's not afraid to just let it all hang out like that, you know? I've been watching him, thinking I'd try to learn that dance and compete with him from out here in the ocean... But I just can't seem to swing with that crazy, funky rhythm of his. That guy's incredible!''

The most densely populated island in all the Great Sea, Kaito has quite a bit to do whenever he's here! Shopping, helping... Anything really! It's often worth his work however, so when he comes by, he does whatever he can!

Dragon Roost Island (B-6)
'There's a real peculiar cave toward the backside of this here Dragon Roost Island. Yeah, real peculiar. But I doubt you'll ever get there to see it, small fry-unless you manage to sprout wings and fly, that is... 'Cause you won't be getting there otherwise!'

Dragon Roost is home to the Rito Tribe, a race of birdlike people who serve the Sky Deity, 'Phos'. When Rito children come of age, they climb the mountain to meet with the great glowing dragon, and are given a scale which allows them to grow their wings. Kaito will have to get by with his grappling hook and deku leaf!

Heartland's Island (C-3)
'Let me tell you a little something about that island over there, small fry... The guy who lives there is named Heartland, but rumors say the folks he's got up there are actually insects! Insects, fry! Still, from what I hear, he can decipher maps like nobody's business! It just goes to show that you can't judge a person on rumor alone, fry! Of course, the thing about this Heartland guy is that when it comes to pay his deciphering fee, you'd better be ready to fork over some serious dough. Anyone who doesn't have a deep wallet won't be reading any maps, that's for sure.'

And doesn't Kaito know that now. It emptied almost his entire wallet just deciphering one of those things! Too bad Heartland's the only one who can do it.

Northern Triangle Island (C-4)
'Let me tell you, something, small fry... There's a gorgeous young missy on that Windfall Island looking after any stray kitty she finds! But the thing is, this gang of canine-loving hoodlums is always causing trouble for her. Those little delinquents like to cause all sorts of trouble. They go chasing cats up trees, ruining the property... What a bunch of savages. Somebody's got to scold these scoundrels and set them straight for the sake of that poor girl! You hear me, fry?'

Kaito wasn't sure what this had to do with the Triangle Island, but it certainly helped out later on. The Island itself was where he needed to place 'Din's Pearl', one of the three keys to unlocking the Tower of the Gods.

Eastern Fairy Island (C-5)
'Word is, they hold an auction every night over there on Windfall Island. Every night the people gather in the Hall of Wealth to amuse themselves by spending a little money. Ah, the rich! Auctions may be a race to see who can bid the highest, but I'll let you in on a little secret: the key to winning an auction is to be both patient and bold. I'm serious, fry! From what I hear, they get some great things up on that auction block, too... Like heart-shaped stuff, among other things. Maybe that's just a rumor. You should try it out, small fry. You might just like it!'

Once again, the fishman told him more about another island than the one he was on! AH. Nonetheless, he was easily able to figure out the isle on his own--once inside, he was greeted by the Great Fairy 'Chris', who granted him a greater bomb bag.

Fire Mountain (C-6)
'You see that there volcano that's spewing out lava like there's no tomorrow? Yeah, well, they say there's a great treasure hidden inside that thing. The thing is, everyone who's ever tried to get inside has just been blasted away by the great balls of fire that come shooting off the top. If you want to get inside, you ought to find the island that's one square north and four squares west of here. That's where the power to freeze anything is hidden.'

The key to this island was none other than the power granted to him by the Fairy King, and what a gift it was! With the Ice Arrows, he was able to freeze the flow of Fire Mountain long enough to recover the 'Power Bracelets', at which point it stopped entirely.

Greatfish Isle (D-2)
'You should come around these parts on nights when just a wee bit of the left half of the moon is missing. ... That's when IT appears, fry!'

Once a great island, home to a village housing the sea deity 'Jabun', the entire place was razed to nothing but scattered ruin by Black Mist's hand.

Tower of the Gods (D-5)
'I've done a fish-fortune on you, small fry, and from what I can tell, it looks like you're fated to come to this place many times. And the keys that control that fate are none other than the lucky items known as the Triumph Forks! Yeah, they're some sort of magical utensils! If you want to learn more about the Triumph Forks, talk to that guy, Heartland! That's what the fish-fortune told me! Now, I know I may only be a fish, but my fortune telling is uncannily accurate! You'd better believe it, small fry!'

The fishman's 'fortune' was all too correct. After defeating the challenge presented by the Tower, a portal would open to the land of Hyrule beneath the seas--he's returned there multiple times since then, though the portal has since closed, and cannot be opened again except (apparently) with the use of the 'Triforce of Courage'.

Eastern Triangle Island
(D-6)
'Tell me, small fry... Have you ever caught a fairy before? 'Cause from what I've been told, when you've been beaten to a pulp by monsters and such, and you think you've finally met your match... If you've got a fairy with you then you've got nothing to worry about. Don't you wish you had something handy for carrying fairies around with you, fry? If you want one, go south from here until you see a miserable-looking submarine floating on the sea. Look there!'

This Triangle Island is where Kaito was required to place the second pearl, 'Farore's Pearl', as one of three keys to unlock the Tower of the Gods. With so little to see, it's no surprise the Fishman had little to say on it!

Needle Rock Isle (E-1)
'You've seen the boats sailing around here with the real huge cannons, right, fry? I bet you those things have their hulls packed with treasure! Of course, if you don't have a cannon yourself there's no way you'll ever sink one of them...'

Metal ships under Black Mist's control were no surprise--Kaito's seen them before. But one of them was particularly viscous, and golden as well! Sinking it revealed that it was in possession of one of the Triforce charts, making it well worth the effort made in shooting it down instead of fleeing!

Southern Triangle Island (E-4)
'A famed pictographer lives far to the north of here in Windfall Island. He's apparently real wise and talented in the ways of pictography. He's even said to have legendary pictographs that he treasures above all other things. He keeps them hidden away in a secret safe, or so they say. By the way, small fry... What exactly is a pictograph, anyway?!'

By the time he got here, he knew exactly what a Pictograph was, thank you very much! As for the island itself--unmentioned by the Fishman as usual--Kaito would place the final pearl, 'Nayru's Pearl' here, to unlock the Three-Key seal for the Tower of Gods.

Private Oasis (E-5)
'So, tell me, small fry... Have you heard of the golden set of Triumph Forks? It's right there, I tell you! A chart that shows you where they are! In that house! If you want it, you'd better go in there and scour the place from floor to ceiling!'

Or perhaps that was ceiling to floor? It took a bit, but Cathy eventually handed over the deed to the Island, and thus granted Kaito access to the inside of the Cabana. A switch on the ceiling, and he then had access to the labyrinth beneath the floor... ...And thus, the Triforce Chart inside!

Bomb Island (E-6)
'You ought to come sail these seas on nights when the right half of the moon is missing... It'll give you shivers, fry!'

Bomb island had far more use than the cryptic warning the Fishman gave--aside from being host to a hidden cave of treasure, a Goron merchant also set up base here, allowing Kaito to trade goods.

Diamond Steppe Island
(F-1)
'Oh, I've got some great information, small fry! Lucky you! If you use the treasure that's hidden on that island there, the thing that vanishes as soon as you get near it... It won't vanish anymore! You know...IT! I'm talking about IT! That thing that appears on nights when a wee bit of the right half of the moon is missing! Don't you know what I'm talking about?! IT!'

Kaito's not sure what 'IT' is at all until he has the 'treasure' on this island--more precisely, after going through the hidden cave located here, he would find the 'Ghost Ship Chart', revealing that great 'IT' which the Fishmen went on about to be the ghost itself!

Southern Fairy Island (F-4)
'Listen up, small fry-this is just between you and me... On Outset Island, buried beneath the black soil...there's some serious treasure. I know it sounds like I'm trying to pull your leg, but I'm serious. Try digging there!'

It's almost tradition by this point, that the Fishman give him useless info on another island... But ah well. Ignoring the advice about tricking pigs into unearthing money for him, Kaito would find again on this island, the Great Fairy 'Chris'. Chris would, in turn, once again increase the capacity of his bomb bag--which is actually rather useful given that the bag itself never changed size!

Ice Ring Isle (F-5)
'There's this amazing treasure inside that freezing ring of ice over there. But even if you wanted it and tried to get inside you'd just be frozen solid as soon as you approached the shore. But...if you go four squares north and three squares west, you'll find the power to melt any ice--no matter how cold! Search for it, small fry!'

Cold was putting it lightly--even stepping on shore would freeze him solid if he didn't watch it! With the power granted by the Fairy King however, a fire arrow was able to heat the isle just long enough for him to retrieve the Iron Boots from within. Curiously enough, the island never refroze after that...

Forest Haven (F-6)
'Just a wee bit north of this island, I've sometimes seen a merchant of incredible girth with a monstrous pack on his back. Now, what could he be doing on that lonely little isle? I tell you, there are some strange folk in the world, fry...'

Kaito wonders rather often why the Fishmen are more likely to give advice about other islands, rather than the ones he lands on. Forest Haven is home to the Koroks, the spirits of the wood who formerly took human shape. Guarded by the Great Deku Tree, it was here that Kaito would retrieve Farore's Pearl.

Outset Island (G-2)
'I heard that beneath the big-head boulder on top of the hill here on Outset... ... Is where they greatest treasures of all, the golden Triumph Forks, are buried. But actually, fry, I must have misheard or something... 'Cause this one guy told me that what was actually buried beneath that weird rock was a chart to this shard of something called a Triforce. Whoever heard of that? That's crazy! There's a big difference between "Triumph Forks" and "Triforce"! I mean, I think someone intentionally buried something misleading there.'

There was indeed a Triforce chart beneath the head, but it took a lot of work to get it. Outset Island is Kaito's home, but never did he ever imagine such treasures lay within it! Also within the island was a Great Fairy by the name of 'Mihael', who granted a larger wallet to him. It seems 'small', but given that the bag didn't change its actual size, it's actually rather impressive!

Headstone Island (G-3)
'Small fry, there's a real heavy stone head blocking a cave on that island. Don't you wonder what's behind it? Don't you want to get in there? Heh heh! Let me tell you a secret! If you go north four squares and east three squares to Fire Mountain, you'll find an item that gives you the strength to easily lift anything, no matter how heavy it is. With that thing, you could lift that stone and toss it out of your way as if it were light as a feather.'

Not far from his home island of Outset, was the island which acted as the entrance to the Earth Temple. After recovering the Power Bracelets and using them to do away with the stonehead blocking it, he was greeted by the memory of Melag, the previous Sage of Earth, and tasked with finding her reincarnation 'Rio' to awaken her as the next one.

Charts of the Great Sea

Kaito's charts are of course utterly useless off the Great Sea, but that doesn't mean he'll just toss them away. Indeed, combined with the notes of the Fishmen, his charts paint a rather good image of the world he knows, particularly given how far he's traveled! While information of the Great Sea's general Isles is on another page, this particular page goes over the 'special charts' that Kaito has on his person.

Takashi's Chart
A chart mailed to Kaito by Takashi, the travelling merchant, soon after he managed to purchase bombs. It tells him of the locations where Takashi's stores can be found, including a 'masked merchant shop' he has yet to visit. As Takashi inherited the job from another, the map has yet to be updated with his own face instead.

Heartland's Chart
A somewhat simple map, which depicts the location of his island home in relation to Windfall, as well as two Great Fairy isles. It was scrawled on scrap parchment from Heartland's prison cell, and as Heartland had very little time to do so, it is rather difficult to properly read.

Ghost Ship Chart
A curious chart which depicts an island for each phase of the moon; supposedly, something will happen if one is at the depicted location during the right evening time.

BAA-Ning Chart
Much neater and cleaner, this chart was given to Kaito via the mail, and depicts where the triforce charts may be found. Thus far, Kaito has collected three Triforce Charts, and marked them on the map--he's also managed to get Heartland to decipher one of these charts for a fee, though the shard is not yet marked on this map.

Big Octo Chart
Salvaged from one of the Triangle islands, this chart reveals the location of the 'Big Octos', enormous squid-like monsters known for devouring ships. The number depicts how many eyes each one has.

Kaito has obtained Triforce Charts from the Private Oasis, Needlerock Island, and Outset Island's 'Savage Labyrinth'. In fact, he appears in the Dressing Room not long after clearing the Labyrinth's Thirtieth floor and preparing to sail off elsewhere! (He couldn't move further without a Mirror Shield)

Thus far, the single chart he's had deciphered points to a salvage point near Gale Island.

The Wind Waker

A curious instrument indeed, this silver baton grants incredible power to those who know the tune to play. Kaito knows of all six of the possible melodies (within the game, at least), but not all of them really have much use outside the Great Sea... Nonetheless, they're one of the few things he can display to prove the existence of 'magic' in his world, without actually expending magic energy. Additionally, he tends to have the Wind Waker on him, so chances are he'll use it for SOMETHING, even if it's just to play music.

Wind's Requiem
A simple tune, this allows Kaito to change the direction that the wind blows in, both for the cardinal or 'middle' directions; north, north-west, west, south-west, south, etc. He learned it from Mach's shrine marker on Dragon Roost Island.

Command Melody
Don't be fooled by its name! While the music learned within the Tower of the Gods is indeed able to allow Kaito to 'possess' certain statues, this doesn't extend to people unless they explicitly allow it. Of course, Kaito would have it no other way...

Ballad of Gales
This song has unfortunately lost its use. While on the Great Sea, this song allowed Link to call upon Ponta's cyclones in order to transport himself across the seas. However, now that he's out of range, it isn't likely he can do that...

Earth God's Lyric
Even in his own world, this song has a rather limited use. It's a nice one though; Kaito is supposed to play it for the one who Melag, the Sage of Earth, reincarnated into, in order to awaken the bloodline of sages.

Wind God's Aria
Much like the Lyric, this song is meant to awaken the next sage, the Sage of Wind. Kaito is meant to play this song for Alit, the Korok, whose previous self was the Kokiri sage by the same name.

Song of Passing
This is a tune that Kaito learned on Windfall, from a dancer who believed his steps would 'make night into day'. As it turned out, the dance referred to motions with the Wind Waker--playing the song makes 12 hours pass, becoming either evening or day.

Inventory and Equipment

Kaito's inventory comes in two parts: there's his 'main equipment', which he typically has with him at all times, and then there's his 'secondary equipment'.

His main equipment consists of his sword, shield, and power bracelets, along with the 'Pirate's Charm' which Astral left him.

Of his secondary equipment however, he can only take three items at a time. In addition to his bags, the items he can carry vary considerably, and are each listed below.

More often than not, Kaito will be carrying the Wind Waker as one of his three objects, but no matter what, a note will be made of his 'current inventory' at the start of a thread or post he takes part in.

Storage Bags

Kaito has three different bags, and lucky for him, unlike in the 'game-verse', he's able  to simply carry one of these bags around with whatever is inside... As opposed to being only able to take a single item out for his 'on hand inventory'.

These bags each have a specific purpose, and moreover, had a number of items in them when he came from his world!
